engine sounds
i have heard several enigne sounds in my life and know what most of them are from a bad rod to a lifter ticking. but what doe a piston knock sound like? i was told it is similar to a rod knocking but it sounds more like metal to aluminum knock. is that true?

I don't really care about brands Chevy Ford Dodge ...as long as it doesn't sound like two old dudes farting in a coffee can.

Re: engine sounds
thanks for that i was thinking the wrist pin was what was knocking. would a compression test tell if it was the piston slapping the cylinder wall?

Re: engine sounds
I have done a lot of noise chasing over the years and I think a lot of guys were full of bull. Listen through a rod or long screwdriver, yeah right, you can hear everything going on, even the alternator whining but to discern a piston slap from a wrist pin ect? Well, not me and not them either I don't think.
BTW, a cracked flexplate can sound exactly like a rod knock. Or a loose fuel pump arm can be misdiagnosed for any number of maladies. It's a crapshoot.

BTW, piston slap should be loudest when cold and quiet down as the engine warms up. I doubt you would see much on a compression test except a wore out engine which I would think it would be if there was piston slap.fordman wrote:thanks for that i was thinking the wrist pin was what was knocking. would a compression test tell if it was the piston slapping the cylinder wall?

Re: engine sounds
i figure this engine is going to be parted out anyway. i am just trying to learn more from the bad stuff. its not like i'm going to fix it. i just want to know what it sounds like. so i can tell what the next one might be.

Re: engine sounds
i can actually turn this one back and forth slightly with the fan blade and hear it make the noise. i think it is a rod but i am unsure. i haven't started the engine yet. that will be tomorrow for sure. i have stripped everything but the things needed to drive it to test it.
