FE vs FT

Post by Joshpow »

I got offered an engine and trans from a 67/8/9? Ford bus. I have been told that the bus would have an FT engine. It looks like an FE, and has 352 stamped on the ds of the front of the block. Would it still be possible it is an FT? I would like to get it if it is an FE for parts for the 67. If it is an Ft, I assume it would be useless for me.

Thanks
Josh

Yes, it'll be an FT engine....and yes, it'll be pretty much worthless to you. There's not a lot on an FT that will swap over to an FE. The stronger crankshaft is the one thing that someone might be interested in, but the machining necessary to use it in an FE block is expensive, and is probably not worth the hassle and expense IMO.

An FT block will work in place of an FE block with the additon of a bushing to correct the bore size for the distributor shaft. DSC Motorsports or any good FE shop should have the bushings.

I'm not totally up on FT displacements but 330's have small bores and might not bore to 4.05 IIRC.

It may well be...

To what are you relating that? :?

FT engines came in different configurations...
The engines came in 330, 361, and 391cubic inch displacement, but the also came in both medium duty and heavy duty versions.
It is my understanding that even if you had two 330's with one being an MD and the other being an HD version, many parts still would not interchange.
FT's have a low rpm power-band, so they have a lot of low-end torq and power, and are usually governed to stay within that band... Which makes them a poor swap for an FE and vise versa...
It would take alot to make one work in our truck.

I have an 330 FT MD in my bus, and a 361 in my storage unit...

What about the tansmission? Will it fit my FE? How would the gear ratios of the trans compare? Thanks for the answers on the engine part.

Hey JoshPow,

I'm not real sure, but I think the tranny will interchange... the 361 FT I got, came out of a U-haul and it had an NP435 attached to it...
The bus has a Clark 5 speed w/a 2 speed rear end...
The 5 speed seems to be pretty low geared and very close ratio to match the rear end...
Top speed in the bus is about 55-60 in 5th high, and it is windin' out pretty good.

I am curious how the 5spd would fit, mostly concerend about size and weight. But I would imagine besides the closer ratio would be similar to the NP435. 5th gear is still a 1:1 right?

Hey Fireguy...

I'm not sure what the differences are... or what the gear ratios are
I've never even seen a Clark 5-speed out before, it maybe totally differant than an NP435 and require a different bellhousing.
What little I do know about them I learned from another FORDification member...
I think his name was Iceman, he was in Alaska, but I haven't seen him on here in a long time...
I didn't even know there was such a thing as an FT series engine until I joined the forum...
There seems to be very little info about them.
Hawkrod probably has more info on them than anyone one the planet...I'd give him a shout.

I spent last evening getting a new BumpWiki article started, entitled FT vs. FE (in the Engines Category). Anyone who has anything to add is encouraged to log in and do so.
