C-6 Rebuild with TCI Kit Waveplate/Clutch Question????

Post by nytreeman »

I'm rebuilding a C-6 from my Bronco using the TCI 448905 Truck Master Kit ,I'm using the Haynes manual and not much info comes with the TCI kit.So I've got to repacking the clutches and the sheet that comes with the kit(2 whole pages) says not to use wave plates in the packs, so then I assume I add an extra clutch or clutch in it's place, it doesn't say? I know these tranny models are all different and there are extra clutches and steels with the kit.. any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

put in as many steel and friction plates as you took out. you can also put in more to make the trans a heavy duty trans for a truck/ bronco. i think the light duty has 5 pairs and the heavy duty has 8 pairs. i think. heres a exploded view for you.

this kit has 1 extra forward clutch ,my forward clutch pack originally had 4 clutches and 4 steel plates, and between the last steel and the bottom pressure plate was the wave plate but if I remove it like the TCI sheet says, and add just a clutch in it's place I have way too much clearance like .057 or so ,it says it's supposed to be .020-.040 in the TCI specs should I put another steel plate beneath the last clutch and the pressure plate?
I'm in the middle of this now

well I tried it adding the extra clutch PLUS an extra plate and now it has no clearance know just enough to get the snap ring in and that's it,damn, the truck wouldn't even shift up it's so tight

if tci has a web site i would check on there about that wave thing. i do not know what that is. if you cant find the answer doing that you may have to call them and as them what they are doing writing wrong instructions for or what the deal is.

Talked to a TCI "tech" and after a 25 min wait to get connected to him,boy he was in sure a hurry to deal with me but I'm sure they deal with a lot of crap, but still, wtf, but basically he said to do whatever to get it close as you can,lol ,he said even if I had to to stack 2 clutches or 2 steels on one another keep them at the bottom they would be ok,I always thought they should alternate no matter what??no

You can put two steels together, no prob, just do it at the bottom, if necessary.

but 2 clutches together? And that would get me closer to were I need to be,but that sounds sketchy to me
:( I don't want to get this back together and in and then pull it again! :x
If my wife wasn't driving this too it would have a NP 435 and that would be it

First mistake- Don't ever give your money to TCI. Hope it works out, their stuff is crap and customer support is a joke.

Yes,Ive learned that now, :x ,the instructions are a joke, nothing will come in to specs, and when I talked to the "tech support guy" all he wanted to do was tell me too get it close as possible, what?,or to get the case bored to make the clutch/plates fit WTF why don't they tell you this in the instructions or on their freakin' website??? I wish I had just got a stock rebuild kit, tranny is on hold for the moment til I pull out the other C6 thats in the bronco now which has a broken case but had been rebuilt a cple years ago,for parts maybe I'll use the plates from that to get it in clearance, unbelievable
NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY FROM TCI >>>>my :2cents:

I would avoid stacking frictions together like the plague. I would prefer not to stack steels together if there is any way to avoid it.......

Way to avoid it......

..... chuck pressure plate up on lathe and turn a step for the snap ring.

selective snap rings are available for fwd. and dir. clutches to correct small differences.
