throw out bearing squeals do pedal bushing need replaced???
Ok on my 67 the throwout bearing will squeal if you are setting idleing ... maybe it does all the time just cant hear it over the engine dunno.
Now if i take my foot and pull out just a bit not even a 1/4 -3/8 of a inch the squealing stops or if i push over on the brake pedal it pulls the clutch pedal up and the squealing stops as well.
Also the z-bar below sets at a angle downwards toward the engine is that normal??

Check the engine mounts and the bushing on the engine side of the Z shaft. Also, look at all the clutch linkage holes and rods. They ware, you may have to weld the holes closed and re-drill them, Same with the rod ends, weld the warn part and grind back to size. Last thing is cab mounts if they are collapsing, it will cause the clutch to be out of adjustment. That will cause the throw out bearing to ride on the pressure plate.

It does not matter what other problems you have, if the throwout squeals it is bad. Lifting teh pedal pulls it back from the pressure plate so it stops spinning and thus stops squealing. The problem is it is supposed to be touching and so that is the problem. Hawkrod

Re: throw out bearing squeals do pedal bushing need replaced???
Hawkrod,
I agree the bearing needs replacing.I also agree it might be just a bad bearing. But our trucks are old and there is usually a reason beyond the obvious why things break. So,if he doesn't correct why it is running on the pressure plate all the time, the bearing will fail again in a short amount of time. I had the same problem with throw out bearings failing early. I also had to fix the problems causing it, ie: cab mounts and linkage. Even if it is only an adjustment it needs to be corrected.

I agree, if something is broken it does need to be replaced but the problem is the bearing is supposed to be touching all the time so the fact that he lifts the pedal and the squeeling stops does not indicate any other issue. Hawkrodbumpside wrote:Hawkrod,

bad throwout bearing?? are you suppose to grease the bearing at all before you put it in there??

i would think so . greasing any moving part would be a good idea i think. but i wouldn't over grease it because of excess grease getting on the clutch workings. pp disc and flywheel.

I'm confused. What is the 1" of free play in the clutch pedal for when you adjust the clutch . I always thought it was so the throw out bearing didn't ride on the fingers of the pressure plate unless the pedal was depressed. Please explain.
Sorry steveC, Sorry if I gave you any incorrect info. I am just wondering why the bearing should touch all the time.

Re: throw out bearing squeals do pedal bushing need replaced???
The bearing always rides agains the plate but it does so "unloaded". There is only very minimal pressure. The free play is there because most pressure plates "grow" as RPM increases (centrifical force push the arms out) so there has to be space for this. Newer designs such as hydraulic usualy do pull completely off but most older mechanical ones do not. Also to the question above, most bearings are prelubed and sealed like an axle bearing. There are some that can be lubed but very few. Hawkrod

SteveC,
You're supposed to grease the outer transmission shaft (the part the throwout bearing slides on). This will stop it from making the same annoying noise you're hearing. I didn't do that once and it was so annoying. The second time i tore it apart I lubed that shaft and it's been trouble free since.

ill have to see if i can do that ... i may be able to squeeze my hand up in there while a friend pushes the clutch in. Then see if i can get a little grease on the shaft its self

Re: throw out bearing squeals do pedal bushing need replaced???
I have to disagree that the bearing always rides the fingers. If you have the freeplay adjusted and the pull back spring on the lever, it would not contact and you don't want it to. I also agree that if it's noisy replace it and correct the issue causing it to spin all the time.
There really isn't a provision to lube most T/O bearings until you get into big trucks or heavy equipment. As sidoiler said, lightly lube the bearing retainer. At one time I had heard you could but you bearing in a pan of grease and heat it until it melted. I'm not sure what that does to the grease but I never did it. I replace the bearing anytime I have cause to split the engine and tranny because I hate doing that job and don't want to be in there again any time soon..
