What machining work is common?

Post by saidyene »

I'm trying to figure how much an engine rebuild is going to cost me. I have a 360 that I will be turning into a 390 or leaving a 360 depending on cost. I have never had machine work done and have no idea how much it will cost. What is common work to need done and how much does it cost. I don't have time to pull the engine apart to check its condition until I take vacation and I would like to have the money already when I get to that point. I will also be having my c6 rebuilt or replaced at the same time. So any estimate on the cost of that will be appreciated as well.

saidyene,

the common stuff is, turning the crank, machining the sealing surface of the heads for proper head to block sealing, and cylinder boring to true up the cylinders, and valve jobs.

you could need one or all of the above done, and i'm gonna say like most things, rates will very depending where you are.
im gonna leave the price estimating to someone who has more experience than me. their are several here thats very knowledgeable in this area so maybe with it bumped back to the top someone will chime in with the info your looking for

head work is the most common thing to do. boring a block usually is only done when you need or want to go with larger pistons. turning the crank is also only done when the crank is bad. or a want or need for different sized bearings is needed.

Fordman,

over time cylinders will take on a ob longed shape its not something you can actually see with your eye. boring a cylinder is actually done to true the cylinder back up. over sized pistons is a by product of the boring.

i know what your are saying. i knew that when i posted. not every engine will need bored though. its not a common problem. but is recommended for a worn or overly worn engine.

I am in the process of doing exactly as you describe. I paid around $800 which included:

Vat Block
Bore/Hone Cylinders
Resurface Flywheel
Surface Heads
Deck Block
Sonic Test Cylinders
Oiling Modifications
Gap Rings
Resize Connecting Rods

My block did not need an align hone but I had it checked to be safe, I also did alot more work such as a complete balance of the rotating assembly.
If you want to do a basic stock street rebuild you should be able to get most everything done for under $800.

Eye Candy for you, I just painted mine getting ready to reassemble everything.

Everytime I build an engine for myself or others, this is what I do:

have block, crank, rods, and heads fully cleaned, and magnafluxed
bring parts back home, completely de-bur everything, and do oil mods, polish rods.
take parts back to machine shop and have the follwing processes done is order:
Block:
wash parts again
install ARP studs/bolts, align hone/bore
deck block 90* to crank centerline to a certain deck height
bore/hone cylinders with torque plate...I try not to go over .040 overbore
hone for moly rings,plataeu hone
install cam bearings
Heads:
suface heads and all gasket surfaces if needed
install new guides(bronze) and hardened exhaust seats
valve job with new stainless valves
new valve springs
Crank:
grind,polish,champher oil holes,balance
Rods:
install ARP bolts(preferably wave-loc),resize,rebush and balance
then I bring everything home, clean again and paint, install brass freeze plugs and begin assembly. checking ALL clearances.
Machine work usually runs 800-1200+parts.
-but you dont have to go to all that for a rebuild, its just what I prefer. Good Luck

Some may not know what "magnafluxed" is. Here is a link to wikipedia that explains the purpose and how it works.
