Build me a 302

Post by papabug71 »

Well, I have just about given up on my dream swap. 390 NP435 ect.ect. So I guess im going to piddle with my little mouse motor. Its in need of a good rebuild, the top end was freshened up in 93 so I guess I should go ahead & do a complete rebuild.

Keep in mind guys its not going into a drag truck. It needs to be streetable. But streetable to me can be something other than stock.

Its going to be bolted to the factory 303 3 speed & im still going to row the gears with the clolum shifter. 9" rear with 3:25's. The truck will be driven less than 500 miles a year, just on the weekends & to cruise nights & shows & things of that nature.

Here is what I have in mind. Please tell me your thoughts & if you have a reccomendation, I want to hear about it.

1971 302 V8
start with a good rebuild, with quality components & bore if needed.
Go through the heads & make sure eveything is ok.
Edlebrock preformer (or similar) intake. Nothing too drastic, no single plains...
Eddy 4bbl carb CFM??
268'ish?? cam with compatable valve train. I would love to run a lumpy stick just for the sound, since i dont drive the truck all that much. But I dont want to compromise streetability & I cant spend a pantload on the 40 year old iron heads.
headers & good exhaust
electronic ignition, good wires ect.

I think that would perk the old man up alittle & turn heads when I pull into a show as well.

What do you guys think??????? :?

My brothers trying to sell his edelbrok preformer intake he bolted it on the motor but never ran it so its really brand new with box and paper work. I think it sounds like a good idea to rebuild,I wish I could come up with the $$ to do the same. I say DO IT!! :D

The in-laws say no dice on the 72 F-350. It had everything on it I will ever need to make my truck the way I have always wanted it. 390/NP435/PS/PB.

As usual, they are going to keep it & "fix it up someday". I'll keep looking for a 390 NP435 combo locally tho.

I like the roller 5.0 idea. I know a couple of five-o guys here in town. I need to go talk to them sounds like.

Thanks guys! :fr:
