How much oil?

Post by ROBT257 »

Just picked up a 1972 Ford F250 4x4 with a 360. Not sure if the dip stick is original or not. Its reading very high. Planning to change the oil anyway. Can't find any specs on capacity. I figure its around 5qts. Figured you guys were the experts. Plus any recommendations on oil? I use Pennzoil 10-30 on three other vehicles. I live in Texas.

5 qts sounds right. have another one around in case that doesnt fill it. what numbers are on the dip stick? and how long is the dip part of the stick. not including the hadle. for a fe it should be 18 inches.

I'll have to check that. I didn't really pay attention to those details. I tried to get a Chilton today at both Advance Auto and Oriellys. Niether said they could get one. Are there any other all in one publications out there for novices like myself? What about type of oil? Is 10w 30 ok for Texas weather?

Ford Truck FE 6qts with Filter

Ford Car Fe 5 qts with filter

Using a car pan and a truck dipstick make it show low when full.

Using a truck pan and car dipstick requires 2 qts to go from add to full.

Unless in north texas, I'd run 15w40 oil. Or 5w40 diesel engine oil, which is good all the way up to Cannuck land......

30w is pretty thin for Texas.

You guys are great. Headed to the parts store now. Today I will be turning the first wrench on this new project. I'll be back!

Looking for a shop manual. Any ideas? Oriellys and Advance said they can't get one.

Ebay... I buy the factory shop manuals... but never as a set.

I have a complete 71 set that I only paid 27.50 plus shipping for all 4... beats the hell outta most aftermarket manuals...

I only use Penz if it's free and in an junker. That stuff will sludge up a ford. I use Delo 400 in mine, still has moly in it too.

I bought from them. I was disappointed. Low quality scans. Its just a bunch of images, no menu, kinda hard to use. You may get the whole set on ebay for that price. I bought the '70 set for less with shipping and it included an owners manual, and the dealer brochure too. Keep an eye on ebay. Ask here in the mean time.

I don't care what your book says, I've had 6 of these trucks, all FE's and ALL of my 4x2's took 5 Quarts with filter and the 4x4's take 6.. The 4x4 pans are bigger, period.

If you are going to be that way I don't care what you say. Here is the Ford scan and the pan is bigger on a 4*4 but does not really hold more it is arranged different.
