does anyone know the duraspark system?? ive head different people talk about it, mainly the modules how there different colors ie blue. heres my dilemna: im swapping a small block into a 84 mustang, it had a duraspark ignition system in it for the 3.8L, i have a duraspark distributor for the 302 but it didnt come with a module. can i just plug and play or do i have to find the right module? then if i do that how much do i need to know about wiring to install it properly? i really dont want to spend a whole lot of money since christmas is coming up, i just want it to move and maybe take a trip in the next month with it. if money wasnt a problem i would probably buy a msd system. but basically i just want it to run and be reliable until i can gather up some more money. ive already put lots in rebuilding the 302 so its getting pretty tight.

Modules all basically interchange. Easiest to find id the "Blue Grommet" unit...Napa TP40. There is a "california module" and a matching coil, which is supposed to have a higher output,...never verified that.

so the v6 module will work for the v8 distributor?

Modules are the same for 4 6 or 8 cylinder engines, the module does not care how many cylinders are in an engine, they just make the coil fire every time the distributor pickup send a signal. All that matters is that you have the correct module for the wiring in the car. Distributors all have the same plugs. As far as an 84 is concerned they only used one module by that time. Hawkrod

I would qualify that statement. All modules do not "basically" interchange although most do. There are several that do not interchange at all as they have a different connector and wiring. Hawkrod

I was referring to the Durespark II modules only.

sure there is a more technical referance, (circuits affected, etc) but the Napa illustrated Ignition manual should have the basic information. I'm looking for my OLD motorcraft catalog as we speak.

Run the blue, don't confuse yourself with too much info. Most of the other colors were early versions, like the black and green and they might have been superseded by the blue later on, can't remember for sure. Then I think one (yellow?) might have been designed for multiple applications. I had a new one laying around for years and it had 3 pigtails.
Lots of the guys on Fordsix recommend using a chevy module but for the life of me I don't know why.
I prefer to get all my blue grommet modules from junk cars, get the OEM part because a used on of those is better than any aftermarket one is new.

If you go on the MSD website there are wiring diagrams for just about every system out there. I think it's under the "Tech" tab. I'll see if I can post a schematic, I've got one somewhere...

that seems like it would probly be the better more expensive option to the stock duraspark setup. but do you still need the duraspark distributer?
