carrier bearing removal

Post by peanutman »

Ok i have my driveshaft out and replacing all u- joints and want to replace the bearing as well. Bought a new carrier bearing-the whole thing just not the bearing. Haven't looked at it close yet but the books say nothing. Does the bearing just slip off or is it more complicated than that :?
Thanks! Robbie

The bearing in the middle of the two driveshafts. No, it takes a press and sometimes a little heat to get it removed.

I recently replaced the carrier bearing in my '68 CS...
I looked all over for a machine shop that could press it off for me... to no avail.
I called a couple of reputable shops in the area...
They use a cut off wheel, which is what I ended up doing.
Cutting as close to main shaft as possible, cut cross ways across the bearing face, trying to be careful to not cut into the shaft.
It took me about half an hour to do mine that way. I could probably do in about half that time now that I have done it and sorta know what I'm doin'
I used a 2x4 and a BFH to drive the new one on.
I have had no problems with it, though I did cut into the flange a couple of times...

After a day with a Big Hammer, heat, and cold; I had mine cut with grinder. Pressing is the only way and even at $65 (which seems steep), I would press the bearing in a second.

I used a place out in Garland to press the new one on, I cut the old one off. I also found the parts to rebuild the greasable slip yoke on mine. It was only about $20-$30.

65.00$? Definately worth it.

I did it all by hand, hammer, wood block, fire, and ice...and it only took most of a week for just the carrier bearing! Sometimes it's just better to pay.

JH i bought the carrier at auto zone. Get the carriage, rubber and bearing- should come all put together. It was same price as bearing alone was about $18.00. There are two places in irving. The catipillar dealer and allison dealer. I kinda goofed. i called the allison place but went to catipillar. Took me a while to find someone in shop to help me but they fixed me up.

catipillar is right on hwy, loop 12 at grauwyler and allison is at 2339 e. grauwyler 75061 which is just east of loop12. Allision shop p# is 972-438-1406. Hope this helps. You may also try southwest axle in haltom city 817-654-0020. May be a little closer to you.
