NP 435 oil

Post by '75-4x4guy »

My 1974 owners manual states that in temps below 10* SAE 30
above 10* SAE 50 .
I was using 80/90 weight gear oil but, after reading the NP435 GM repair manual (posted in the tech articles) it said "The use of extreme pressure type lubricants is not required "
That being said I guess that 50 weight oil is ok .
Any comments ?

I'm getting ready to overhaul my NP435 and the Novak rebuild instructions say to use 85W-140 for most climates, GL-4 and GL-5 rated. Full Synthetics and synthetic blends are "a good idea".

However I had a phone conversation with a Novak tech and he said the 30W, 40W or 50W motor oil would work fine too depending on specific climate operating temperatures.

I'm still pondering what I will use. Haven't decided yet.

What are you going to be using the truck for?

I haul firewood from the eastside and I use 50lb. It never gets to hot or to cold around here, so I don't worry to much about it.

I JUST took my truck out for a ride with the "new tranny" and body and I am running 50weight in the tranny.
I did not notice any strange noises ,or any excessive heat ,it is 85* here now .
I think 50 weight is just fine as Greg said .
By the way Greg the truck looks GREAT !

I would use the 50w, just to keep from smelling the gearlube. My 435 has gearlube and no shifter boot. I get a pretty good aroma of gearlube when she gets hot.
