How to tell if axle is locking

Post by blue68 »

I have a 9" Ford rearend laying behind my house and I dont know if it's locking or not.

How can I tell if it's locking just by turning the axles?

thanks

Both tires will spin in the same direction when you spin one tire. If one spins oposite of the other its a non locking rear.

check the tag if it's there. would read like "3.50L" for locking. gear could be 3.25 or 3.73 etc.

You had the right idea, except that the "L" would be located as such:

Locking: 3L50
Non-locking: 3 50

And usually just spinning one tire and watching the direction the other one spins will give you the answer, as CO684X4 mentioned. However, a one-legger that's seizing up can exhibit the same behavior, though that's admittedly rare. 99% of the time though, if the opposite wheel spins in the same direction, you do have a limited slip.

yep, your right Keith. Was thinking that as I was typing and thought I should confirm, but got lazy :)
