AOD swap

Post by j41385 »

Ok I currently have a C6 auto, but after driving my dad's dodge cummins to the Lake 3 hours away I have seen just how much I am missing out on with no overdrive. So naturally not wanting any Electronics I have picked the AOD. And from careful reading It seems the Best ones to get are from a 1992-93 F150 2wd with a 5.0. They have the 2" od band, the A servo, the most clutch packs, and the rear oiling. But as of yet I havent found one.

So besides getting the Lokar Throttle Valve cable, what all do I need to do to do this successfully? I will be getting a flexplate from napa also.

Thanks :)

Make sure to add an extra tranny cooler to it.

AOD's dont like the heat.

good luck on finding one from 91 up, everyone went for the E4OD's for an option in 91 and up. ive owned a few mustangs as well as trucks and the 80's AOD's hold up pretty good. throw in a transgo shift kit and it will be good to go, but like stated from sparman, they dont like the heat so another tranny cooler is a good investment.

Why can't you upgrade an older AOD with the larger band and the drums that accept more clutches? Besides, the early AOD's built up hold up fine behind some pretty hot stang motors.

You can upgrade the older smaller od band, but the kit is another 300 bux, and the clutch pack kit is 150, and the a servo kit is 120. So if I could do a stock rebuild on that perticular trans, it would save a pretty penny.
