Ailing Stright Six on 67 Stepper

Post by robwymer »

I have a 67 F-100 with a pretty bad-off 240/300 straight six and a NP-435 4-speed tranny. I also have a 302 from a Town Car lying around not doing anything. I know the 302 and the six share the same bolt pattern for the tranny, but what I want to know is would swapping the engines be pretty straight forward, or can I expect problems with the flywheel, transmission cross-member, cooling system, etc. I'm pretty sure I have the correct perches for the 302 already. I also have an AOD, but its linkage is missing.

The idea is to carry out a low cost swap to make the truck more reliable while I put the six on a stand and tear into it.

Any advice from the experts?
67 F-100 Flareside, 300, Offenhauser 360, Holley 390, Duraspark and MSD ignition, NP-435 4-speed, 3.55 Dana 60, and it will absolutely roast 30" rear tires taking off in 2nd (the one time I tried scared the Bejeezus out of me)

Next engine mod: RV cam (252*)

The bell housings are the same but not much else as far as the install goes.

Not bad to do, if you have the right parts.

What is wrong with the 6? Those are dirt cheep to rebuild.

(sorry, I am a I6 guy...I hate to see them taken out.)

Thanks for chiming in MadMax.

I'm not sure what all is wrong with the six, but it knocks, smokes, burns oil, is very anemic, and might be a 240 on top of all that. I've got the 302 sitting there and all the parts that came with it to include starter, flywheel, all accessories to include power steering pump and air conditioning, etc. I've been tempted to put the 302 in for some time now. I've already been down the 302 vs six road before and I'm not looking to open that can of worms again.

Basically, I have a six that needs a lot of help. I've considered buying a 300 long block with an RV cam for it, but the $1700 with shipping is a lot of money considering I have another motor sitting in the garage.

That said, I am looking into the feasibility of this swap to try to save some dough while I open up the six and rebuild it, provided the block is good.

Another consideration is that the 302 is out an 84 Town Car, and the torgue specs that year were 260 lbs-ft (I believe measured at the rear wheel) at 1600 rpms. I also have an Edelbrock Performer (not RPM) intake, Holley 390 carb and HEI distributor w/ built-in coil for the 302. I ditched the old heads, so I would need those. I have a project 73 Bronco with a 302 that isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so I can take the heads off it.

Again, I'm looking for advice on the feasibility of the swap and how much trouble it would be to make it all work. If too much pain is involved, then I will just spring for the 300 long block, and try to pick up an Offy intake for the six so I can use the Holley 390 carb.

If you have all of what you say, then you are one the right track.

It sounds like you will just need the small stuff.

Clutch Z-Bar bracket
Mounts (Towers & Rubber)
New Exahst
Linkage/Cable to the Carb
Nuts & bolts
Hoses
etc...

I took my 302 out of the 79 a few years ago and still have a lot of little parts. Think it trough and post a list, I bet I have half of it.
