4x2 and 4x4 rearend differences? Now with pics
I was wondering if there was difference in the rear dana 60s between the 4x2 and the 4x4. I have two 67's and one 79'. Will the parts inner change between the three? I am wondering because I was going to haul the ones I am not using to the salvage yard. But if they inner change I will keep them and make one good one out of all three if needed. I am assuming that the drums are the same?? Any insight would be appreciated!!

Does anyone have a link to a diagram on how to take the dana 60 brake drums off.

Pull the axleshafts, remove the spindle nuts, pull the hubs, knock out the wheel studs, remove the drums.

I'm guessing by cover you're refferring to the axleshaft? If you have an early Ford (pre 1970) D60 it will have studs with nuts and taper locks holding the axles in. Remove the nuts and use a punch and hammer to carefully loosen the taperlocks. Once you get the first few loose the rest will fall out.
If you aren't saving the old axle and just need the brakes don't be affraid to wail on the axleshafts with a sledge to make the job quicker. Those taperlocks can be a real bear sometimes.

Re: 4x2 and 4x4 rearend differences?
Got both of them out and the whole brake assembly off. It was pretty simple once I got the axle out. Whoever had it apart last used a whole tube of rtv, so getting those taper locks out was a pain.
Does the 79 come off the same way?
I will get some pics up in a little bit.
I am hopping to take the rest of the frame to the salvage yard in the morning.
Thanks Dustin

Glad you got it licked!
Probably already scrapped that thing, but if you haven't the factory overloads and brackets on that frame are very hard to come by. Might save them if you want to haul some weight with the truck.

Re: 4x2 and 4x4 rearend differences? 67 vs 79
Well I stayed up too late last night and didn't get up earlier enough to haul it to the scrapper.
I will get the overload and brackets off it. It will work on the 79 lift kit right?
I started taking the 79 axles out and they are different. They are different splined than the 67.
The 67 has big splines and the 79 has small splines. Also the 79 doesn't have the locking rings.
67's
79's
Is the bottom one an overload also????

Re: 4x2 and 4x4 rearend differences?
Ok this is pretty sad. It took me two hours to get the drum off. I finally got mad and started to hit it, not that hard though and it made a crack. Then the drum fell in half. Some one really messed up the drivers side drum. It was wore completly gone. I did get to use the parking brake brackets off the 79 in the 67 brake backing. Some one cut the brackets off both sides of the 67
The overloads are 2 1/4" wide and the 79 springs are 3" wide. So i don't think they will work.

I am interested in the overloads if you decide you want to sell them.
