Ring gear backlash tool
Where can I buy the tool that you use to check the backlash when you change the ring gear? And how do I use it properly

re: Ring gear backlash tool
those are both nice examples. stay away from the flexible base ones, like this one http://www.tooltopia.com/index.asp?Page ... rodID=8164
I find these are hard to lock down for accurate readings.
Find a solid clean spot on the diff housing to lock your base down. set up dial indicator to read on one of the ring gear teeth as close to 90 degrees from tooth as possible. Hold pinion gear(yoke) move ring gear (by hand) to limit in one direction. Zero dial indicator, move ring gear in opposite direction read indicator. double check every thing.
Moving the ring gear closer to pinion decreases back lash and away from pinion increases back lash. hope this helps.

Make sure you still have a decent contact pattern in the proper location when you get the backlash set.
