Speedo cable.

Post by Darrman »

I have a problem, my c6 speedo cable is junk, I ordered a new one without looking at the old one, and now it wont work.
The one I bought has a screw on cap on both ends, the one I need has a retaining clip that bolts to the trans.
Anybody have a idea what year cable I need?
Thanks!

I was just going to replace the cable on my 72 P350, and it was $40 some odd buck, but them started to think back on my other old trucks that I spent $$$$ to get the speedo working, and decided against it.
I use my Nuvi GPS system and it gives me a accurate speed.
My 67 when I am doing 55 the speedometer says 65.
My 59 I was going down the street with traffic, and said this thing is cruising good, and looked down, and it said I was going 80, (I WASN'T)
The new GPS systems you can buy for $150 and they tell you accurately how fast your going.

What year truck do you have? Rock Auto shows this cable for a '68 with a C6, and it is as you describe:

I would go to NAPA, but Rock Auto's number is ATP Part # Y803

This is the one for a manual trans, and it sounds like what you want:

It is Rock Auto part # ATP Part # Y801. BTW, they are like $12. Make sure and get a new o-ring with it.

Well my truck is a '69 but has some donor parts from a mid to upper 70's truck. The engine and trans are not original.
I will check out the Rock Auto cable, that looks like it, but I need to take the cable out so I can side by side compare.
Thanks!

If you use the Y801 cable, you need to install a plastic driven gear on the end and get the retaining clip. Also, don't forget the o-ring. The Ford dealer carries all these. I'm not sure what gear you need, but here is a PDF page from the Ford Racing catalog that will help you figure it out:

I've found that if you just get "pretty close" with the gearing, the speedometer will read close enough to correct.

F.W.I.W......i went thru cables pretty quick on the 69 for a while. Bit the bullet & got a genuine ford cable. Problem solved.

My 68 C6 has the screw in type and it screws in on the passenger side of the transmission. My 72 has the retaining clip like you have but located on the driver side. Both of mine are the older FE C6s with the bolt on yoke and the short tail shaft.
Side oiler FE, see if you can catch me!!!
