1969 F100 Transmission

Post by Stevens1965 »

I've decided to try my hand at restoring my Dad's 1969 F100 Ranger that he bought several years ago from the original owner. The previous owner had installed a large camper in the bed of the truck, and had put a bunch of miles on it. Dad bought it (without the camper) and was proud of the 360 CID engine, and the manual transmission with overdrive (has a little pull-handle mounted under the dash). Then the transmission started acting up, and he couldn't find anyone around here to repair it, so he allowed a shop to replace it with a transmission that doesn't have overdrive, and seems to allow the engine to run at higher-than-necessary RPMs, and doesn't seem to have the power to possibly tote around a big camper.
According to the door plate, this truck originally came with a "3-speed Ford light-duty transmission". Was the overdrive probably added later? I'm still trying to research what it had, and what was later installed. What was the "light-duty transmission" that it likely came with? I think I'd like to put that one back in it. I'm counting on you guys to get me through this process!

Welcome to the board stop in at the welcome mate and say Hi.

The over drive was probably and after market add on.
Ford 3.03 3-speed is "A" code on vin plate.
Or possibly Borg Warner T-85

Thanks, Wes!
The transmission code on the VIN plate is "C". From the information found here, I translated that to the 3-speed, but I suspect that you're right. When the original owner added the camper, he probably had some kind of aftermarket overdrive added also. I'll keep digging and see what I can learn.
Jim.
