78-79 HP D60 brake rotors.....

Post by HRDROKN »

Looking on line for brake rotors and it seems that I can find rotors for the 1979 model year, but very little comes up for the 1978 model year :o So whats the difference and how would I determine exactly what year axle I have?

The rotors are all the same dimensions except for the stud holes, so yes, the later rotors work great as long as you upgrade your 78-79 hubs to 9/16" studs.

The only part I'm sketchy on is some of the early to mid 80's light 3/4 ton 4x4 trucks with the Dana 44 TTB front axle used 1/2" wheel studs and what look like the same brake calipers as the 76-79 trucks. These may be the same parts as the early trucks, I don't know.

The heavy 3/4 ton 4x4's from 1980+ used the Dana 50 TTB front end which uses the same spindles and hubs as the dana 60, so they are a good source for parts to upgrade an early dana 60 to better brakes.

Hey Dustin...

So to use the later model 9/16 stud rotors, I would have to drill my hubs for 9/16 studs or are there model year hub choices that fit the spindle bearings and have 9/16 studs?

The hubs are all identicle except for the wheel stud size. So you can run any 1980 to 97 Dana 50 or Dana 60 hub on it to get the 9/16" studs without drilling.

OK...

I haven't checked the local NAPA auto parts yet, but I don't seem to be able to find hubs with 9/16" wheel studs on line?

Anyone know of a source????

Thanks!

Mark

Well it looks like the 1/2" wheel studs are only that because the are necked down... looks like the bores already support 9/16" studs? Unless the 9/16" wheel studs even have a bigger base?

Hmmmmm....

Yeah, the holes for 9/16" studs are bigger than 9/16".

I would get hubs from a wrecker if need be. Any Dana 50 TTB hub will do.
