Filler tube problem with C4 behind a 240/300 I6

Post by cdherman »

I have just muscled a C4 under my truck with a 240/300. The C4 came off a Mustang with a 302.

When I went to bolt the hanger for the exhaust back on the 300, which attaches to the two bell bolts over the starter pocket. It bolts up fine, but interferes with the filler tube.

I can also get the filler tube to fit, only if I leave the exhaust hanger off.

The tube is for the V8 -- I have no idea if they are different. Maybe there is a different shaped tube for sixes?

Could it be that the 240/300 with a C4 requires a different hanger for the exhaust? I had a t-18 manual before.

Ideas?

There is a pan-fill and a case-fill C4. The pan-fill has a tube that screws into the pan. A case-fill C4 has a tube with an O-ring which goes into the case.

The years could be mixed. They were both made at the same time. Pan fills usually came in trucks and big cars. I'm guessing you have the case-fill C4? You can install the proper pan and tube for clearance, but then you have to plug up the hole in the case. Lokar makes a flexible trans dipstick tube assembly which might work better than the stock tube in this situation.

Yes, its a case fill tranny. Yes, I know that case fills did not come with trucks. But the general understanding is that case fills are actually a little more compact. Not overall apparently.....

Really wish I had not started this project right now....

What is wierd is that the fill tube bolts up to the bell fine, clears everything... UNTIL I try to bolt on the exhaust hanger, which it interferes with.

I really don't like the Lokar flexible setup, but I may be headed that way......

Put the exhaust hanger on and use plumber's strapping or an exhaust hanger the universal kind) to reach to the hole. Had to do that when I replaced the dead 300 in my '75 E150 with a 170 from a '71 Comet.
