lokar kickdown kit

Post by mike73 »

I need a kickdown rod for my 72 f100 and an Edelbrock carb adapter for my C4 trans. Has anyone used the lokar kickdown kit? IF I go with the kit I know I need to purchase the bracket for it as well. Will I still need the Carb adapter or just those two things? Thanks

Doesn't that lokar kit use a cable instead of a rod? I'm curious about this too! (need to hookup an Edl 1405 to C6 at some point)

Im curious to see some answers to this question too, as I currently have no kick down. I thought I read somewhere that the lokar kick down wouldn't work with the stock accelerator linkage.

I am getting ready to order the Lokar kickdown set myself. A couple of observations thus far:

1. I have the throttle cable kit, but did not use it. It is hard to implement without also switching to their pedal. I would have to create an extra bracket for the throttle cable at the intake, and cut the 24" cable down to like 6 inches or something. I made a rod out of No 10 rod and bent it to go from the carb to the throttle lever under the hood - bypassing completely the trapeze setup (removing it completly). The trapeze setup essentially make a 4-bar linkage system with fixed points that will transverse the pedal input to match the carb motion of the accelerator bracket. By using the Edelbrock Ford adaptor & trans kickdown kit on the Edelbrock carb, you can use the holes up high instead of down low on the carb (like the factory config does), and hence the trapeze can be eliminated from the circuit.

2. The lokar kit for throttle cable has a bracket that will need to be used that attaches to the LH rear carb stud hole when installing the kickdown cable set.

I have been wondering if I need this too, I have probably 8 thousand miles on my c6 without it. It kicks down like any other transmission would. Does this cable make it hold the gear longer before downshifting or something?

Nope. If installed correctly, it will function just like the stock one but it looks prettier! If you need one, they're a nice replacement but they're mostly just for aesthetics should you choose to get one to replace an already working one.

What I was saying is with mine I dont have a kickdown, stock or otherwise. The only thing I have is the Vacuum modulator hooked up.
IS the kickdown going to do something special if I order one? My c6 kicks down now just fine so I am wondering if it will hold a gear longer with this.

Your transmission will not kickdown if you have NO kickdown linkage installed. A kickdown basically just downshifts automatically when you stomp the 'GO' pedal (if you're not already going too fast for the 2nd gear) but cannot do it if the linkage is missing. The Lokar one will not do anything more special than a stock one but it is a nice piece. The vacuum modulator basically controls your shift points and is required on all automatic transmissions.
