T-18 shifter

Post by Jason »

I have a 69 with a 300 and a T-18 transmission and my shifter now spins all the way around after i bumped it in the cold weather the transmission shifts fine if i can keep the stick straight enough to shift is this a hard fix (never pulled the top plate on a ford) I know when my old chebby did it. I just replaced a pin in the bottom of the shifter if anyone could tell me what part to buy and any other info would be great.

basically the same thing here...Just access the bottom of the stick, push down on the retainer, and turn until it releases. I sometimes have to use a pair of channel locks to get enough leverage to turn the retainer, but once its loose, the stick will pop right out.

No, you dont have to remove the entire top shifter cover to remove the stick....

I cut a piece off a drill bit of the correct diameter to replace the pin on mine. I figured its pretty hard and should last another 37 years. Very easy. As I recall, all I did was remove the cover and slide a replacement pin in where the shifter pivots. I've probably made no sense, but once you take it apart, you'll see.

The early T-18's used a screw on shifter retainer, you don't push down and turn like a 435, they just screw off.

You can buy them from Novak, only place I've personally found them, but if you send me a PM with your mailing address I'll send you one (I bought several of them and have one or two spares left). beats having to replace chunks of steel that have lost their temper when you cut them down.
