dually rear end?

Post by idaford »

Hey guys.I have been thinking about turning my 68 f250 camper special into a flat bed with dual rear wheels. My first truck was a 69 f250 that my uncle had used a chevy dually rear end in. My ? is could I put dual wheels on my 68 f250 some how or do I need to find a f350 dually rear end? If I have to change the rear end then I would rather find one that has disc brakes. What years do I need to look for? Also what about the front end, I want the rims to match. I have the disc brake front on it from the factory. Thanks          Todd

Well,
I am a dually truck owner.
Major differences in the rear diffs. are the hubs. I'm not sure if you can put a Dana 70 dually hub on a Dana 60. I think the tubes are the same size. Not sure. The next thing would be, how far out would your tires be?

I'm not sure if the Dana 70 DRW housing is shorter than a Dana 60 SRW housing. The mounting for the leaf springs I believe are in the same location.

As far as the front goes, either run stock SRW rims. Or put dually hubs on the front from a dentside. Then you don't loose your front disc brakes.
All the dually bumps i know of came with front drums stock.

I have a Dana 70 DRW out of a truck, if you need some measurements, let me know.

Don't know for sure. Are the disc and hub separate pieces? If they are, I would think that your disc would work on the DRW hub. I've only done some experimenting with with '77 F350 disc hubs on a '67 drum brake F350. Both trucks were DRW. I've read on this site that the F250 and F350 front suspensions use the same same parts.

Dually rear ends are wider than SRWs, the inner dual is suposed to sit where the single would, so the dually wheel mounting flanges have to be further apart. If you bolted dual wheels to a single wheel axle the inner tires would rub the box inner fenders, or at least be way too close to be useable. Also duallys are usually hub centered where singles are stud centered and the studs on our SRW are'nt even long enough to go through two wheels. So I would say if you want a dually with discs find a '99 + F350 DRW axle.

idaford,
Also what about the front end, I want the rims to match.
The rims from a Ford dually up to I believe 96 will match.
I wouldn't never do it but...
jc whitney has sold a dually conversion for many years.

Thanks for the info I will continue to do some checking of my own. My wife thinks I am nuts for even thinking of turning it into a flat bed cause I am almost done with the truck now. I keep looking at the pics of my old flat bed and miss that truck.

Actually, I think that DRW axles are narrower than SRW's. On SRW's, the rear tires track directly behind the front tires, whereas on the DRW axles, the inner tire tracks inside the front tire track, and the outer tire tracks outside the front tire track :2cents:

Be working on my bump dually tomorrow, (on concrete for now).

I'll try to get the measurement form hub to hub on my D70 rear axle.

Should be 64" between the wheel mounting surfaces. What we need to know is how wide is the rear axle on idaford's 68 F250. Or even how much clearance between the spring pads and the backing plates.
