1968 Overdrive Tranny?

Post by uboughtwhat? »

This is a copy of the info here on the Fordification site for 1968 data plate deciphering. What Tranny would the code "B" designate?

TYPE CODE
4-Speed new process A
3-speed overdrive B
3-speed Ford Light Duty C
3-speed Warner Medium Duty D
3-speed Warner Heavy Duty E
4-speed Syn. Warner F
Automatic G
4-speed Warner P

Was an overdrive manual really available in 1968?

Boy do I feel like a putz....all this time I have been looking for an overdrive and it turns out they were available from the factory.

Now, was this tranny a solid performer or a boat anchor...and..if its worth fooling with, can one still be had without selling the first born to pay for it?

Thanks,

Jeff

Here are a couple scans from the factory service manual which describes how the setup works.

Can you get engine braking if you lock it out of overdrive? Or do you freewheel no matter what?

Tony, as long as the overdrive is locked out the trans functions as any other manual trans.Yes you have engine braking. :)

Jeff, I have 2 of them. :) One came from a 68 SWB with a 360 the other was in a slick.P/M me if you're interested.

It won't be necessary to post your kids on Craigslist.

Here is a question for you guys.

Could this od unit be bolted to a different transmission?

Or does it only fit the 3 speed unit?

As far as I know it will only fit the 3 speed.

That would seriously suck then.

Would be nice if it could/would fit behind the 4 speeds in our trucks
