Transmission Swap

I am new at the rebuild game and need a little help. I have 1967 F100 with a 352 engine. I was hoping to switch out the 3 speed transmission for an automatic transmission. Can someone please tell me what automatic transmission will fit? :?

The bellhousing bolt pattern for an FE (352/350/390/428) is unique to this engine family, so you'll have to make sure to find one specifically for this. You can get an FMX or C6. I'd personally suggest finding a C6.

You'll also need to be aware that LWB trucks have a bolt-on yoke for the driveshaft, whereas car transmissions have a slip yoke. LWB trucks need the bolt-on yoke to utilize the two-piece driveshaft, whereas SWB trucks usually use a one-piece driveshaft with a slip yoke.

ive got two c6 automatics that will bolt to your engine if you are looking for one. they both work properly and have been tested by me personally. one is still in the truck and i drive it around the yard once in a while.

Short wheek base 1967/72 Ford F100 trucks with a 360/390 FE engine and a C6 automatic transmission also use a bolt on yoke. The drive shaft has a built in slip yoke.

Hmmm....wasn't aware of that. I know the SWB trucks with either an I6 or small-block with a manual 3-spd had slip yoke in the trans. What about the I6/small-block automatics? I'd imagine they were also slip-yoke?

i had a three spd from the factory with a 240 6 that had a bolt on rear yoke on the trans. it was a lwb and not a swb

Right....all LWB trucks' transmissions had a bolt-on yoke from the factory. I was wondering about the SWB I6/small-block and automatic combos.

Keith, did you ever find the answer to the bolt on yoke, versus long tailshaft with integral slip yoke question?

I am worried the answer is bolt on yoke, as I just struggled through a C4 install in my 65 and the long tailhousing caused the tranny to hang up on the crossmember and firewall.

A manual tranny can be unbolted (in fact MUST be unbolted) from the bell housing. The automatic trannies need to be installed with bell and torque convertor in place and my experience today is that the long tailshaft makes for trouble.

We got it in, but there was brute force and too much foul language involved for my taste.

Would be interesting to know the answer to your question -- certainly effects what can be recomended to folks seeking to swap over to automatic trannies.
65 f-100 SWB, 240 I6, T-18, now swapped to C4 with difficulty. Yeah, I know. Its a 67-72 site. But my frame and entire drive train are just like yours!!!!

Yup. My '69 2WD short has a 390/C6 with a bolt-type trans yoke and a slip driveline.
