Shortning 9'' housing

Post by gonzalo medina »

I am currently working on my 67 mustang project. I need a rear and every mustang shop around here charges the rediculous price of $400 plus dollars for just the housing. I do plan to put some money in the third member and axles but $400 for a plain housing is just not going to happen........anyways I was told you could get any nine inch housing and have it shortened to the dementions of your particular application. My friend also mentioned you could have custum axles made as well. I have inquired this here in town but I just wanted some oppinions.

That's what most do. Get a big bearing truck housing. Have it whacked down to the width you need and get axles made for it. Alltogether should run you $400.

you could make the tool to shorten it if you have excess to a mill. all it is three pieces. two ends that fit into the bearings with a center hole and a rod to keep it straight when you weld it back together. i got new big bearing ends for like 75 bucks.

Like Dustin said on the housing... When I did the one on my 68 stang I used the housing out of a 70 mustang and cut it down and put new ends on it... I ordered my axles from Moser http://www.jawsgear.com/store/catalog/i ... ath=23_417 They seem to be the best budget and heavy duty... :2cents:

its going to cost around 400 bucks for the axles with the bearings. i think it was 299 for the axles another 60 to 80 for the bearings but there alot nicer then ones you get at napa. then shipping. new billet end 75 bucks. you can get a 1000 rap up into it easy. back brace 60, studs ect ect.

what is the measurement backing plate to backing plate, you need? If my memory serves the 70's granada had 9 inch's at 52" between backing plates. Lincoln Versailles came with 9 inch and disc brakes and were easy to stick in early mustangs.

My 67 came stock with a 31 spline 9".
I wonder why they want so much for just a housing.

It's finding/building a narrow big bearing housing that's expensive.

Bare truck housings aren't worth much at all. Cut them down to early mustang size and they are though.

Ok guys I found a complete 9'' drum to drum for 60 bucks. It even came with an extra third member. The guy said it aint the big bearing but the price seems to good to pass up. It's from the a 75 ltd. It does have the huge drum brakes which is a plus. I did got look at it and for the price it's definatly worth it. I had another concern regarding the location of the back preasure hose which is in the center over the pumpkin instead of the left corner like the mustang originally had it.
