3 spoke steering wheel on a 71 or later column

Post by dotcentral »

Seems like I've read somewhere that the 71+ columns are different at the area where the steering wheel mounts, making it hard to use the earlier 3 spoke columns. Is that true? Any one been able to get it to work and look right?

All you have to do is grind off the nub on the end of the '71-'72 steering shaft, for horn button clearance.

Or, If say you're you're a little slow like me and already put the 3 spoke wheel on the '71 column and tighten the nut before you figure out they're different, you can holesaw a hole through the metal plate on the rear of the horn button!

You cut a hole up thru the horn ring? Pic's!

Just gonna put a 67 wheel on my 71 too. I was gonna get the plastic
thing that holds the horn ring on. 7.00$ + 12.00$ S&H. Cute. It would
fit in a envelope. Why is it these "enthusiast" suppliers try to SCxxW
everyone?

The bumpside-era steering wheels won't fit on a '78-'79 column. I tried with a '68 wheel on a tilt column. I don't know if the '73-'77 columns are different though.

Not only does the bumpside wheel have a smaller hub:

...but the bottom of the wheel has some nubs on it that interferes with the column:

Keith, I have a 67 column and 2 70's style (2 spoke) wheels. I want a 60's style (3 or 4 spoke) to put on.

I thought the 70's took the 2 spoke wheels?

What where the cut off dates?

You said you wanted to trade for a '79 wheel, I assumed you had a '79 column and wanted to put a bumpside wheel on it, so I was alerting you that it won't swap over. All the wheels from the bumpside era are interchangeable, as long as you grind off the shaft end on the '71-'72 columns before trying to mount an earlier wheel.

What about a 3 spoke 60's steering wheel on a 74 column.

Shaft needs ground off, but will the hubs match and horn still work?

Anyone?

I tried to put Dotcentral's 3 spoke wheel on to a 73-74 column. Once I tightend it down it bound the steering wheel up where you could'nt turn it.
I looked at everything I could think of but could'nt tell where it was binding at.
He has a 71 style wheel on for right now.

Will the steering wheels from any of the Ford passenger cars of the 67-72 era also interchange with the trucks? The wheel on my 72 looks gross and I'm looking for an earlier-style wheel to replace it. Just curious to see if a passenger car wheel from the late '60s was too different.

I have another possibility to ask about...

1971-1972 column with 1971-1972 wheel. That works. How about the 1971-1972 column with a later model wheel, the one used from 1975 on with downswept spokes, I think they used it through 1991 in the Econoline vans and 1986 in the F-Series pickups. I see a lot of them on vans in junkyards and it's what I put on my '75 Torino when I couldn't stand the duct tape covered stock wheel anymore. That wheel came off a 1989 Econoline.
