Man the motor's running good! Have driven it all week long!
Anyway, now when I'm stopped at a light in Drive, or have my foot on the brake and have it in Reverse - I hear a light grumbling/groaning noise. If I shift into Neutral it goes away. Doesn't happen every time but I'd say at least half the time. Any ideas?
It's an FMX/Cruise-O on a 302. Fluid is between "add" and "safe" with engine warmed up and running.
Thanks

re: Transmission noise?
Sound like its time to service the filter/fluid and adjust bands.

re: Transmission noise?
Thanks. Within the last 2 months I replaced the fluid and filter. Is a band adjustment best left to a shop? What are the chances they would know anything about the FMX?
Thanks

I found this. Hope it helps.
Type in "band adjustment FMX/Cruise-Omatic" in the search bar.

re: Transmission noise?
Thanks for the link. They've got a resident tranny guy who just retired with 47 years in the business. Lots of good info and threads on all ford tranny's. I posted my question there as well.

re: Transmission noise?
For posterity: The moderator at the ford tranny website suggested it might be exhaust manifolds hitting a x-member.
He was right
The pipe that leaves the collector on my headers just rests on the tranny x-member on the drivers side. I guess the lower rpm at idle in Drive makes everything shake a bit more and when it does it taps that crossmember.
I like it when they're easy!

re: Transmission noise?
I had a similar noise in my '70 Cougar w/ an FMX. Turned out the transmission mount had collapsed and it was metal riding on metal, transmits a lot of tranny noise into the body.
