Pitman arm problem

Post by AK F100 »

I am new to this site or any site for that matter. I have a 68 F100 SWB and as part of my project I am converting it to power steering. Unfortunately I have been working on this truck for the past 7 years and some of tis was started long ago. I have a NAPA P/S box p/n 27-7504 and the manual steering pitman arm does not fit the shaft on the new box. I have found many new pitman arms that fit the output shaft and the steering linkage, but they all seem to be indexed in a way that if I center the steering box the wheels are already turned in another direction. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What was the application for the steering box you bought, and what box(es) did you get the Pitman arm from?

The box was bought for a 76, 1/2 ton, 2wd w/ power steering. The earliest model that Car Quest had a listing for a pitman arm was 1980, this one fit just fine except for the indexing problem. I returned the part and looked at many other Ford pitman arms, they were all slightly different in shape, but all had the indexing splines about 15 to 20 degrees off of the original pitman arm. If I can not find the correct new one, I will have to do some digging in the snow at a couple of the salvage yards in the area.

Problem solved, I just received word yesterday that a salvage yard found the pitman arm that I needed. I went an picked it up and behold it was the correct one. It is funny how a 30 year old part that has been cleaned up and repainted can look brand new.
