Differences in rear shock mounts

Post by FORDification »

I was stripping down the '72 SWB donor chassis for parts for the '68 choptop yesterday, and noticed something I don't think I ever paid attention to before. The upper mounts for the rear shocks are different.

Image

Both these trucks are F100s, FWIW. On the left is the style used (at least) in '67 and '68, on the right is from the '72.

I'd like to be able to ascertain when the change was made, so if those of you with '69 thru '72 trucks can take a look at your rear upper shock mounts and tell me which style you have, I can add this info to the site. :D

'70 is when they changed the rear shock upper perches, except for the 4x4's which retained the old style.

Thanks Barry. Just so I'm clear on this, do both the F100s and F250s use the same style?

My '69 F250CS had the style in the first pic, not the stud mount style in the second pic.

Really? I've never messed with F350s, but I was under the impression that none of them had rear shocks. :?

So, since your F250 has the early-style mounts, I'm guessing that it was only the 2WD F100s in which the upper mounts were changed.

Oh yeah the difference is in the F100's only, thanks for reminding me Keith! See if this makes sense:

67 - 69 F100/250 2/4wd all O style

70 - 72 F100 2/4wd all - style

70 - 72 F250 2/4wd all O style

I think that's right, guys can you give me a sanity check on that? :hmm:

My '69 are like the 1st picture too,I know this cause I'm getting ready to move mine out to 18" center to center (unlike on the front prior to trimming the coils.I took before measurements on rear before inverting the hangers )

My '72 F-250 4x4 has hoop style (1st pic) Too bad the Dana 70 doesn't have any mounts on it! BTW The Dana 70 came from a '71 F-350.
I'll have to check the '71 CS trailer to see what it has.

Man who would have thought a change like that. I like the style on the right better. THey look sturdier to me.

All the F-350 Dana 70's I've seen do not have shock mounts welded to the axle, but they all came with shocks. There are two 3/4" diamter steel "buttons" welded to the tubes close to the centerchunk. These buttons act as locating pins for the shock/sway bar bracketry that F-350's have. It's pretty heavy duty stuff. The 70B under my '70 came from a '76 F-350 super camper special. Instead of welding the old shock mounts on I used the bolt on 2wd ones and everything lined up perfect. I haven't hooked the sway bar up yet, but I think I will eventually. I could care less about articulation and I'm interested to see what difference a rear sway bar would make with a heavy trailer in tow.
