If the truck is original, all that info would be on the ID tag. The front axle wouldn't be anything but a 44 as far as I know but look on the reinforcing webs on the center section and you should find a 44 cast into it. Check your rear end for posi by jacking up one back wheel and putting it in neutral 2wd. If it is posi you can't turn the back wheel you have off the ground.

re: front axel
Your frontend will be a light duty (smallball) closed knuckle open diff Dana 44. Not positive on the R&P size.
As far as checking for a posi in the rear, willowbilly3 explianed the way.
Or you can also lift the whole rearend, spin one side and if the other spins the same way it has some sort of posi in it. More then likely a Trac-loc.

Re: front axel
Assuming your running gear is stock, the front axle is a high pinion Dana 44 with open knuckles. Ring gear size is 8½". All factory front axles were open differential. The upper left web behind the tierod should have 44 or 44A cast into it.ak-1970-360 wrote:how do i id the axel in my 70 f100 4x4. i have looked for the dana 44 markings but i cant find anything. also is their any way to know if my truck that a posi rear?

Rear is most likely a 28 spline 9" although there is a very slim chance it could be a semi-floating 19 spline Dana 60 (9¾" ring gear).
As someone pointed out, jack up the rear (or front) and turn one wheel by hand . . . If the other wheel turns the opposite direction, you have an open differential.

Re: re: front axel
So far as I know, all '68-'79 F-100 4X4's had a high pinion, open knuckle, open differential 44 when delivered from the factory. If any of you guys have a low pinion from those years post up a pic and the BOM.Faithful Old Road Dog wrote:I thought high pinions came in like 76 and later trucks.

LOL! Go do some brodys and/or burnouts and see how many tire patches you leave. This is also how I found out I have a peg-leg. And also how I found out motor mounts really matter, LOL.

re: front axel
ya motor mounts really are important. well i did some powerbrakin today and i left doubles untill it got goin really good in 3rd. does it take talent to powerbrake a manual and get it into 3rd. know i feel sorry for my truck because it really isnt set up for that kind of driving . well ill make up for it with the new floors i ordered today from LMC.
