Relp Wierd clutch prob

Post by kid »

The clutch works fine for about two hours and that means two hours of use or scattered 30 minutes of driving.

After two hours the clutch starts grabbing and just backing into my space at home to stop the hopping I rolled forward and dropped the hammer in reverse to get it to roll back into the spot spinning my tires.

It was jumping so bad the truck was breaking the tires loose anyway and it was moving sideways with all the hopping. So I took the easy way out.

Any clues or places to look? In all my years this is the weirdest clutch or drivetrain problem.

I have had a clutch get really grabby like that when they were hot.
It was on a 78 150 4x4, I eventually took it apart after I twisted the pinion in two on the 9" to see what was up, and to possibly change the clutch and found that the input shaft seal on the NP435 was puking gear lube out, It wasn't enough to soak the clutch but it was just making one side of the disk damp.

I don't know if thats your problem but it took care of mine.

Sounds like oil getting on/in it.

Well a t18 does not have a seal. The T18 must not be where the oil is coming from so the intake manifold is going to get new gaskets on both my Fords.

My 350 does leak from the back of the intake but does not get on the clutch

could be oil as suggested, other things involve heat, input shaft getting hot and or is loose and disc is getting stuck on it, either input shaft bearing or pilot bushing or both.have had pressure plate bolts get loose before too, any jamming from off angle or heat traveling from shaft to disc thru the metal can be the cause.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

If thats bolted up to an FE block... check the freeze plug that they install to seal the cam bore. I had one start to leak and it splashed oil all over the back of the flywheel. After a certain amount of time, the flywheel splashed it on to the pressure plate and disc. Caused me to have a jumpy/grabby clutch too!
Just a thought.

No real oil drips under that thing. I am planning to drop the clutch disc payday and get a good look.
