installing parts that i have never done before

ok so i purchased a few things from ebay to get my tranny and rear end running properly.
i bought a filter and gasket set for my AOD
and a Trak Loc Posi for my 8.8"

just wondering i have never touched a tranny other than putting in ATF,
the same goes for the rear end other than brakes and topping up i have never. i would like these things to be a learning experience for me. but am i over my head for wanting to fix these things or should i leave it up to the proffesionals? if i do is there anything i should watch out for. im not so much worried about the trans, it looks pretty simple change 2 gaskets and a filter. but the rear end looks tricky.

The trans service is not hard no special tools, except big dip pan. The Trac lock thou will be allot harder. Here a link read and decide if your up to it

Pinion nut socket
Ring gear bolt socket
Carrier cap bolt socket
Six point cross pin bolt wrench
Calipers or a micrometer

Those are all standard tools. calipers or micrometer are machinist measuring tools. The diff change is easy to screw up. You will want to have someone else do it for you or get someone that has done it successfully, many times and really knows what they're doing to help you through it.

im not changing the diff or anything im just putting in the locker, i think?

Putting in the locker requires disassembly of the rear. Probably not something to jump into if you have never done it, unless you get some help with experience.

A locker is "diff". The differential carrier is the heart of the axle.

The locker will replace the center carrier which supports the ring gear. The ring gear to pinion clearance will have to be reset as well as preload plus bearings replaced or moved over and they need adjusted.

This is not a shade tree job unless you have done many of them and have made or bought all the special tools for the adjusting and have a good torque wrench and plenty of sockets .

i called him up, he said hed do it for a case of beer, he told me that if it has a clutch (its factory locker from a bronco) its limited slip which is good because i dont want a full locker around weather like it is now with all the ice and snow and what not.

Vert true a locker like a detroit will not always let loose in a turn making you slide. They need a lot of torque in a turn to pop loose.

unless someone has installed a 8.8 rear end in you truck that trac lock will not work. unless you are talking about a newer truck? ford trucks mainly used 9" rear ends until sometime in the 80's.

are you talking about just swaping out the third memeber or just installing new parts in your old member.
