Tranny return line question - cooler install

Post by 69rangerman »

Now that I've got the 69 ranger driving again I'm adding a aux. tranny cooler since my lines run so close to the exhaust due to the deeper drop of the long tube headers.

I know I should try to tie it into the return line side but I can't tell which one that is. My radiators tranny cooler runs along the bottom of the rad. with both lines down low - 1 left side, and 1 right side. After driving I honestly can't tell which side is hotter.

Is there a way to figure out which one is the return line?

It's an FMX/Cruis-O-Matic. Both lines come from the same side (pass. side) of the tranny, and the one by the filler tube is higher from the ground than the one at the drive shaft end if that helps.

Thanks.

The return line should be the one at the rear of the transmission. I think that this is true in most transmissions.

The easy way to find out is to disconnect both lines at the radiator and then fire up the truck. The line that shoots tranny fluid 25 feet forward isn't the return line. :P

I did that one time...accidentally...with someone standing in front of the vehicle at the time. Needless to say, he got coated pretty good with tranny fluid. I was aplogizing and laughing my butt off at the same time.

Copied from another site:

Rule of Thumb: The front fitting is OUT (closest to the pump) and the back is the RETURN. On the radiator, the return is the farthest from the radiator hose.
