Looking for a tranmission (or bellhousing) for a 2005 5.4L

Post by Capps899 »

I am trying to find out what transmissions will match up to a 2005 5.4L for my 1971 F-100 4x4. it has the factory 4-speed now but I am not sure if this will match up. I haven't torn into it completely yet so I am just doing a little research in advance to save some time. I have no real preference as far as transmissions go just as long as its a manual. I would like to keep the transfer case that came with the truck, if at all possible.

Since it is a 3V you have quite a few options, you could go with a 5R100 out of a SD or the 6spd manual out of a SD, I think the '05 F150's still ran the 4R100 or 4R70, but they may have had the 5 speed by then in which case it would be the 5R100, since the 3V's run 300hp it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't run the 4R70's behind them. I am sure there are adapters out there to put dang near anything behind it if you have the cash. Check out modualrdepot they are exclusively modular nuts and would know for sure. I'd love to hear updates on that install in your truck and see pics.

Sounds like he's just looking for a manual. AFAIK, your only option is a 5 or 6 speed ZF from a superduty. I know F-150's used the M5R2 5 speed behind a modular, but I've never seen one. I think 99.9% of new F-150's are auto trucks.

If I had the option, I would choose the ZF 5 speed. It will fit an older truck without having to cut away most of the transmission tunnel. The ZF 6 speed does not fit without mucho hacking.

It would have to be the SD manual Ford never put their mazda 5spd behind the 5.4L's in the F150's.

I've heard they used them, could be wrong. I'd figure if they put it behind the 4.9 and 5.8 it would easily hold up to a gutless 4.6. The M5R2 has a bad rap, but they really aren't that bad. Most fail because they get low on oil or they were put together wrong.
