re: question about rear end
If you're asking whether it'll just bolt up with no modifications...the answer is no. You'd need to relocate the spring perches and shock mounts.
Your existing 9" should probably be able to handle anything but a full-race setup. The 28-spline axles would probably be the weakest point. You can just relocate the spring perches on a '73-'79 pickup rearend (since their frames are 4" wider) to get their stronger 31-spline axles.

re: question about rear end
An other, more costly option if you are going to do some serious high horsepower/torque buildup of your engine is to get custom axles made. Moser and Currie are but two companies that do custom axles.
You can also try to find an early F100 4x4 with a 9" rear end. Everything I've heard/read says they are 31 spline differentials, but I don't know that for a fact. They're not to common, so I haven't had the luck of purchasing one yet.
For what it's worth, the standard 9" can handle around 600 horsepower without breaking easily.
