Mitchell HD overdrive unit

Post by bigman78 »

Working on the truck today and had a guy stop by and offer me a Mitchell HD overdrive unit. He said it was something like 28%. He said what the 28% meant but I dont remember. It would turn my 4 gears into 8. He said he pulled it out of his old 74' before he sold it. Said it was the heavy duty ones they use in motorhomes. He also offered me a set of traction bars for the front. All for $200. Which to me sounds like a good deal. Said it was fairly new and that the overdrive cost over $2500 when he bought it. :D Does anybody know where I can find out about these mitchell overdrive units?

Sounds intruiging.

Happen to get any pics of it?

If you have the extra cash get it for at least research for the group.

basically it is a gear splitter. you can put it od in high or lo, and then shift your regular gears. so, say you are just cruising down a flat road, you could put the od in high or engage it, and you would be in OD, but if you came to a hill, you would shift it into lo, and you would be out of OD and in regualr 4th gear. same thing with say 1st gear. You don't want such a low gear ratio, just shift the OD into high and bam you got a higher ration, or you want a lower ratio, shift it into lo. Another member put one similar to this in their truck and have a post on it somewhere on here.
