The straight six bell housing is the same as a 351W, 302, etc. I think AOD automatics came with the 300's. That may be computor controled, I dont know. I installed a 300 with a new process 4spd and had to change nothing. Trans mount was even on the mark.

I'm not sure which one they used in 67..."c4, c6" ?? But would probably be the same as if it were a car...The old galaxies that had 240's often had auto trannies...Probably the most common example for that vintage...I once knew a guy that had one...65-66?? Actually drove pretty well, and was smooth... You couldn't hardly tell if it was a six, or a small V8, unless you knew the sound to look for. But yea, as one mentioned, the bolt pattern is the same as the 302, 351, so units workable should be a dime a dozen...Yea, an AOD would work too..All you have to do is rig up the linkage for the carb, and you can get kits for that I think..

The AOD uses a carb linkage...No puter...So it can be rigged up pretty easy, and I think they sell kits for this. The EAOD *is* puter controlled, and would be a bad choice, unless you wanna spend the $$$$ for a tranny puter...
I would bypass those....BTW...From what I hear, the linkage on the AOD *MUST* be set up correctly, or you can ruin the tranny...So you have to make sure it's right...MK

The AOD would be the hot setup. As stated earlier the AODE is computer controlled but the computer is not seperate, it is built into the engines PCM. Additionally while the bellhousing will bolt up to the 300 fine the trans x-member will need to be fabbed, and possible driveline mods.

re: auto tranny in a 300 straight 6?
I am not sure on whether the 300s came with a noncomputer aod, but one from a 302 or 351W should work fine with the right converter. Most of the earlier 240/300s probably had a C4 which I think would be the best choice. I have seen some C6s behind 300s, mostly in Econolines but that is too much tranny for a 300, it will be happier with a well built C4.
But keep in mind that the overdrive probably won't get any better milage. The later EFI versions with overdrive don't get any better milage than the earlier carburated non overdrive trucks. All they accomplished was to make them a dog by spinning the engine slower. On a pickup with stock 235 tires a 3.50 gear is as tall as I would go without overdrive and maybe a 3.73 with.
Even with a V8 the aod trannys have to shift down on the slightest grade, and can smell a hill from a mile away.
