Locking the transfer case in 4WD

Post by Guardsman »

'72 F100 4x4, NP435 tranny, and I believe it's a Dana transfer case...Is there an easy (relatively speaking) way to permanently lock the transfer case in 4WD? Or, does it require a kit?

I would say put it in 4 wheel and remove the shift linkage. I don't know why you'd want to do that though. It should have a dana 21 transfer case unless someone's swapped a 205 in. It would be a real interesting science experiment to leave an F-100 4x4 with a D21 case in 4wd and see how many street miles you can rack up before the transfercase gives out. The D21 has a real bad rap for being pretty weak. Who knows, you might dyspell the myth?

You need a fulltime 4WD transfer case. They have a differential in them so you can steer and junk without breaking the t-case.

Why would you want to go to fulltime 4WD anyways? Fuel milage too good?

Like Dustin said, maybe unhooking the linkage, but I would think you'd be way better off leaving it the way it is. Even if your planning on using the truck for mainly off road or even rock crawling, I would think there would be times when unlocking the transfer case would be the better idea. You'll tear things up real fast going very fast in 4 wheel drive. I wont tell you how I found that out! :2cents:

yea, fuel mileage would suck. If you wanted to go with full time. then get a np203. you probably have the d-24 right now.

i would either get a np203 or not do it at all. because removing the shift linkage would not allow you to re-shift it back in if it popped out on you. I had a t-case pop out of 4x4 while i was axle deep in mud and got stuck.

It would have the D21, not the 24. The 24 was used in leaf sprung front F-100 4x4's, but not after they went to coils.
