Newbie from Connecticut

First off, before I introduce myself let me just say this....

AAAAWWSOMME SIGHT!

I think every newbie should donate to Keith just for veiwing the "Did you know?"

You think you know everything about old trucks and then you discover the little differences like front and rear wheel cylinders are not the same on 68 F100. (Story Later.)

Anyway, I'm Daren. I live in Southbury Connecticut and this my truck "RustBucket". A 1968 F100 Custom Cab, Fleetside, 360 w/ 3 on the tree. Unfortunately the irony is (no pun intended) there is very little rust on her so I can't call her a total rustbucket. Just the normal areas that you would expect. I still have floor boards which has its advantages and disadvantages. You know how it goes, you need something to haul stuff and the minivan just doesn't cut it anymore. Next thing, you end up with a dream to do a complete rebuild.

I picked up "RustBucket" from a friend's friend whose father had it in Virginia and then died about 2 years ago. The truck set for about 2 years in Connecticut until my friend told me that if I could get it running, I could have it. Amazing with what a battery charge, oil change, coolant (Heater core leaked so I plugged it just to get home.), an emeryboard, matchbook and screwdriver, (O.K. it was a 4-way screwdriver) can do. She fired on the third turn.

Kids today cannot just understand the feeling you get when you fire up a truck and it goes Blub, BLub, Vvroom. It just puts a smile on your face. No chips, no nitrous, just pure power.

Here is where having floorboards has its disadvantages. Blew out both rear wheel cylinders on the 40 mile trip home. Couldn't do a Yabba Dabba Doo through the floor! I think I was really only working on the front left. But I did get her home and now I spend most of my time dreaming about a complete rebuild. Remember, I just needed something to haul junk and wood. Now I cruise the back roads looking for parts. It is amazing to see old trucks parked on the side of the road. I have noticed that people are either Chevy or Ford. You never see the two together.

What have you done to me guys.

I enjoy the sight I will be asking a lot of questions. BTW I got her fixed and drive her weekly.

Why 1968? Same year I was born. It was easy to convince my wife. "Honey, just like me the truck is a little faded, a little worn, but dependable, and strong. It is the same age as me." She could not argrue.

Hi Daren, welcome from Texas! That is a pretty good story, I agree 100% about the feeling you get when she fires up...pure satisfaction, an I-did-it-myself that is unique in this world. It's even better with open headers! You ask, what have we done to you, but we're just here to welcome you. Sounds like you have been heading this way for a long time This is the best site for people like us, bar none.
