2 pc driveshaft carrier bearing

2 pc driveshaft carrier bearing
I removed the old bearing from the short pc of the drive shaft last night and installed the new one (Autozone's got everything!) With a small hammer, I was able to get it most of the way onto the smooth part of the shaft where the splines start. There's about a 1/4 inch gap left.
Does it have to be knocked all the way back to the stop? Or is it fine where it is? The metal bearing retainer was beginning to get deformed from the hammer.
If I do have to move it the last 1/4 inch how can I do this without messing up the bearing?

Usually you get them pressed off and pressed back on if I remember correctly. I don't really have a good idea of how to finish without destroying your new part.

Use a driver, some steel round stock or a punch without a point, to drive it the rest of the way on. Tap all around it, be careful not to apply too much force or apply force where it's not supposed to go. Most applications I have seen do need to be seated all the way for it to line up correctly when installed.

Yup That's a press fit.
You could use a BFH and a pin punch, but you gotta be real careful or you'll Fork it up!

Thanks guys. I paid 15$ for the whole deal. I went ahead and re-installed the drive shaft and everything lines up fine. I still have a week or so before I install the engine so I may take it back out and find some tube stock and encourage it to seat fully.

For anyone replacing these in the future. I take the short shaft and put it in the freezer overnight. Then i take the bearing and put it under a heat lamp.
When i put them together, i slide the warm bearing down onto the cold shaft. I figure i gain a couple thousandths clearance, which is usaully enough to seat it with out to much hammering.
Watch your bearing under the heat lamp !!! Don't let it get to warm, otherwise you'll damage the bearing cage cover...The plastic/rubber part.

thats what the machine shop did to my flywheel they called it sweating,when i replaced the carrier bearing on my truck i used a BFH and a punch and got it back on there tore the dust cover up that was on there took about 2 hours of pounding on it next time im going to take it to the machine shoptwo-bit wrote:For anyone replacing these in the future.
