I say go with the built 700R4. I think the aod is junk. They are extremely expensive to build. Generally expect $1400-$1800 just for a stock rebuild of your tranny. You can get a built 700R4 straight away for a lot less. Plus the ratios and shift points on the 700 are more favorable. Last I knew you could not hold an aod in any gear past about 4400 rpms. Maybe a modified one.
Another annoyance of the AOD is the delay when you shift it into gear. Every time I get in one (we have about 10) I drop it in and press the gas, only to realize it has hit about 2500 before the stupid thing has had time to take it's leisure getting into gear.Annoying

Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

You have one messed up AOD my friend. My AOD in my Bronco shifts about 1900 at the latest. Also I have revved my AOD past 4500 before with no ill effects. And mine is behind a motor Ford never dared to put an AOD behind in a truck, a 351W and not just a fully stock one but I have all the normal mods I can get away with here in CA. My AOD has never been rebuilt and I am at 150K now.willowbilly3 wrote:I say go with the built 700R4. I think the aod is junk. They are extremely expensive to build. To rebuild my AOD with a deep pan, better bands/clutches, shift kit, etc. with them removing/installing it in my truck was $1100 out the door. And mine's more of a PITA since it's 4x4.

From an old tranny builder, me
The 700 and AOD can be made at large expense to last a while depnding
on whats in front of it and who's foot is on the gas pedal. The AOD's do
hold up better. Untill you get one hot. Then the aluminun valve body begins to warp and binds up the press. regulation. Then it goes south
real quick. The 700 has a real weak 3rd and some issues with reverse.
I can tear either one up. I know how to do it. The C6 can be made pretty
bulletproof with the 460 parts.
All depends on what it's used for. Good luck, KeithP

You can get a nice AOD from broader performance for $990. This guys knows transmissions. If it were me, I would pull an AOD out of a mark VII LSC, Mustang, or Bronco (all these had the most cluches) and rebuild it. Get a kit from Broader and a video from bad shoe productions. You will be set.
