if you do one side at a time it is that way you can compare one side to the old side if you forget how they go back together. do you need new shoes on the back? or do you just need to adjust them?

So when you grab the balls at the end of each rear cable and pull, will the cables pull out of the sheath just a little, maybe 1/4"? Just trying to ascertain if the cables are working or if one/both are seized up.

Maybee the linkage on the brake shoe came loose. Or the crossbar
is missing? You should pull the wheels and drums and see what you got.

layedout72, are your cables siezed in their outter sheathing? (they wont slide freely inside the sheathing?)
One of mine was like that, and I freed it up by taking the cable off the truck and soaking it in a pan of paint thinner for a day or so, getting it as clean as possible, getting all the dirt out of there, and re-oiling it, and putting it back on. When youre taking your brakes apart, pay attention with an eye to re assembly. Do one side at a time, and you can always use the other side as an example of how to re assemble. Nothing like good working brakes on a vehicle.

when your underneath the truck see if you can grab the cables after the adjuster and see if you can pull on them at all. they may or may not move. if they don't its really doesn't mean anything. but if you take the brake drum off and remove the cable from the holder you should then be able to move the inner cable. if it won't move then the cable is froze up. it may be able to be freed up but it might not. and you may be looking at new ones.

alrighty. the passenger side cable pulls a good inch or so, and the driver side seems locked up. it moves maybe 1/8 inch? but it may only be when i push TOWARDS the brake, and it pulls back out that little bit.

should i take them both off and soak them today?

edit: didnt see u said to remove the drum and try them that was as well, i will do that once my lug bar gets here.

tighten the the loose one and then check the operation of the brakes before you do anything next.
