Sorry if I gave you the wrong impression. I was just recommending a place you might find one cheaper. I'm not trying to sell it.

Ok, I have a newly rebuilt 1970 302, 351W, heads 270H cam, shorty headers, 600 Holley 4B and a newly rebuilt C4. This is not going to be a race truck, just a cruiser. What RPM stall is the best match up?

That's kind of a hard call. More depends on what you are going to use it for versus anything else. A 270 stock to very mild I would think. I would be tempted to try a cheaper stock replacement (they tend to stall early) and see how it does. Converters are kind of a black art. They either work well or totally suck the fun out of driving your buggy.

ok, I can run my stock one. The comp cam website says a mild stall. I don't know what mild means in RPMs

Stall speed is a function of the engine output in torque and the load on the driveline. A high torque engine will stall higher versus a low horsepower one and a lighter vehicle will load the trans less (accelerate faster).

The old standby was to put it in gear, hold the brakes, give it some gas and see where the tach stops before it overpowers the brakes. That was the stall speed.

Even the guys who make converters say it's 50% science, 40% black magic and 10% W.A.G. They just know what angles on the vanes works best for most vehicles.

Do you run the Motorcraft FL1A filter or the Motorcraft FL820S?

Converter stall also depends on gear ratio... then there is flash stall and hard stall.

I would think the factory converter would work OK with a 270 cam...

Use a FL1A sized filter as long as there is clearance.

Thanks Duck,

I was bolting up my pulleys last night and the water pump pulley does not line up with the crank pulley. I am using all original pulleys, I replaced the dampener with a stock replacement, new water pump, new timing cover. the water pump pulley sits to far in. I know you can shim it but I would like to know what changed? any clue? I don't have the original water pump to compare it to.

Don't forget you changed your timing cover as well and that is more than likely where the difference is.

As far as stall with the converter, the stock stall is somewhere close to 1800 so you will probably be okay with it and that 270h cam.
I have a 302 with stockish late model heads off a mustang and the C4 and a B303 cam which is really meant for a manual trans and am only running a 2300 stall in it with no problems at all.

good Luck

You don’t have enough cam for anything over a stock stall speed converter, plus it’s intended use is a driver. Just get a stock replacement.

Bolt everything else up and see what lines up with what. Much easier to do it out of the engine bay.
