Fuel mileage and performance are at opposite ends of the spectrum. There is only compromise in between. Any engine one of these trucks was designed for will work equally well given the use they are intended for. What is most needful is for the owner to make the decision what that purpose will be and whether or not the owner has the actual funds to pull it off. Sometimes even simple sounding projects can turn into a demon of a financial crisis......especially with engines. And it should be kept in mind that these are trucks....designed to work..........not to race.

I personally really like the 302. My 70 F100 has a 302 with a 4 speed and stock rearend. It does decent on gas mileage( I think around 12 mpg) and it will definitely get up and move when I want it to. It handles everything I do with it from hauling to pulling.

Why is it that the trucks are always the best running vehicles in the family?

I agree on the 5.0 with maybe efi. They are easy to find, and with a few mods and the right gearing you can get desent fuel milage and a good little punch at the peddle. If you could find a t85-n tranny that would be perfect. Out of od it will run like a spotted ape, in od it will reduce your rpm to 2000 at 70 mph with the right rearend. The t85-n is rare and expensive but a great tranny for what your wanting to do.

It will not rob you engine of power the way an auto tranny will. I would not go with a chevy engine for fitment problems. I grew up driving and hot rodding chevys. There sb's are fast but they have a different set of common problems same as a fords. You will run into all kinds of problems and cost you more $$$ trying to put a chevy in a ford, stay with the brand.

I wouldn't put a ford motor in a chevy either. :2cents:

Just out of curiosity. Would you have to update your truck to the 94 specs as far as smog requirements and all that stuff or can you just drop it in and be done? I knew you could not do an older motor in a newer car without all the extra stuff. If that motor will work, I'd say go for it.

well a new law started this year in mass that as long as ur car is 95 or 96 and up you need to do emmisions and if your car is under a 95 you dont need to worry about that in MA.. So as far as im conserned this is a old truck that im not going to worry about any smog BS.. Im going to look more into to what all would need to be done for that to work..

As far as I know, stuffing a newer motor into an older chassis is the way around emissions. Many places have (IIRC) 30 year exemptions or rolling exemptions.
