For less than a grand you can have a dead solid reliable, proven 400-450 HP with an early 460. For $5000 you can have the same thing with a 400.

The 400 was never a performance engine, it has inherant issues (valve guide wear) and they seamed to be the least reliable engine Ford ever put in a truck from what I've experienced. Personally, I'd take a 351M over a 400. I could never tell a power difference, the 351M actually seamed pretty tough and hard to kill (albeit gutless just the same).

If you want different and have the need to lighten your wallet the 400's the way to fly! I think if you want a different engine build an FE.

I wonder what the guy selling a 400 and C6 for $500 is smoking?

I hope you post your project here. It should be fun to watch. What did you pay for the turbo 7.3? I would think that it would fit very nicely in the 71F250.

My Dream truck is a 69 crew cab short bed F250 4x4 with a 7.3 Powerstroke. Granted the Hydraulic Unit Electronic Injection isnt the best but people are now putting injection pumps that are the same as the P-700(Ppump) but for 8 cylinders on powerstrokes and makin a heck of a motor. Ive followed the diesel world for a while now and at first it was all about the electronics but now people are starting to go back to those old 7.3 Powerstrokes for the extra cubic inches. Those powerstrokes are great motors. The only problems i have had have been my own fault(smoked a turbo racing a cute girl in a rice rocket, I was doing 120mph and she never caught me, I have 4.10 gears in my truck,I was at 3100rpm and i redline at 3200 but i won!) I have a 01 F250 excab short bed 4x4 with a AFE intake(soon to be a Jobe Performace Intake), TS performance 6 position chip and its strait piped(home job just took out the muffler) and i havent been beat. Blows the doors of my friends 01 Dodge half ton short bed regualar cab 4x4 with a Built 318( bored over, cam, intake, headers, the whole nine yards). Plus i like the fact that nobody thinks that my Powerstroke is anything untill i leave them in a cloud of black diesel smoke!

Averagef250,
Why would you want a 89-93 12valve? I love the Cummins 5.9 but if your gonna put one in your Bump(which is an awsome decision in my book) why not go with a 94-97 12 valve which has the much better p7100 injection pump. the older 89-93 have the VE injection pump which is isnt nearly as capable as the p-pump. Im partial to putting a 7.3 powerstroke in my bump just because its a Ford offered motor. I know a 7.3 is no more a Ford motor than a Cummins is a Dodge motor but it still makes me kinda queezy to see a cummins in a Ford. It seems everyone has given up on the Ford Diesels even though since 94 when Ford introduced the Powerstroke they have been at the top of the game, at first the most powerful, then the most reliable, and now they have been beaten in the powerful and realiable aspects but 15 years later still there are more Ford Powerstrokes sold than Cummins/dodges and Chebbie/duramaxes.
