Re: door gaskets

Post by In FORD we trust »

I just finished installing my door seals. I used LOCTITE Weatherstrip adhesive from LMC, 5 oz tube was plenty for me for both doors. then I used 2" blue painters tape to hold it on until it dried. I left mine overnight. I thought my install went great, i liked using the stuff that doesn't bond instantly so i could push and pull the seal to form the way i wanted it too. just another opinion. Good Luck! Tim

Here is a picture of mine after its taped up and drying. With the curves it has to follow, i just thought this worked out real well.

Hey guys (and gals),

I might finally be able to get these gaskets installed today. Been waiting on a 24 hour period of decent weather (no rain and maybe 70 degree temperature) because of my bump being outside.

Question: In Tim's picture above it seems his "joint" (or where the ends of the ends of the gasket meet is on the door pillar post. It's been almost 3 months since I pulled mine off and if memory serve me right... :D The ends on my old gaskets met under the door sill scuff plates? Where should they ends meet?

Thanks in advance!
Jeff

I've usually put them on the bottom part somewhere as that is where you would want any fluid to be able to drain out if possible. :2cents:

Guys (and gals),

I got my first set of door gaskets I've ever put on, done today on BC # 16. :woohoo:
It's not really as hard as I thought it might be. I had the gasket laid out flat in the house for days now to rid them of any bends. I used 2 of the 5 ounce tubes of 3M black cement, (and probably would have used one more if i would have had it). I used a lot of tape, (a lot more than Tim did above) but I feel good about the finished job. I also wound up with about one foot of extra gasket material per side. I started on the bottom / worked my way up the front of the door pillars / around the top / then back down to meet the other end (my ends are joined beneath the door scuff plate). Two things I should mention are to have a small brush to apply the glue around the frame area adjacent to the dash / and it would be much easier if the seat belts were out of the way. I also found it much easier to have a lot of tape strips cut already, (another set of hands would've been nice to have doing this IMO). I put the glue on both the inside and outside edges of the trucks door frame / and then on the gasket itself (one door at a time). It took me about 30-45 minutes per door, (anything after that and the glue would be impossible to handle IMO). And I went back around the gaskets about every 15 minutes for the first hour re-applying pressure. We'll see tomorrow, but I think they will be ok!

And the P.S.

And the evilbay seller I got them from for a dang good price!

So did you like the blue tape idea, Would you do it the same way again? I would, but I would put the seam under the scuff plate.(DUH) I don't know why I didn't think of that. I just put mine on the way I took them off. BTW Looks Great. I've found i have to shut my doors much harder. Tim

Tim, yes the tape worked well. I'm still waiting till tomorrow morning to see the final results (probably in the 50's here tonight). Hopefully the cement had long enough to bond. I bet my doors will be the same way as far as being harder to close, (with the old gaskets they were so...easy to close and latch).

Man I know what you mean, time and money for me. I got more time than money, but at least I can say I got a pair of shoes on my feet and my engine is running.
