re: Good Price For A Steering Column

Post by l1k2gadd »

I went to the wrecking yard when I needed to fix my 1968 F100 with a three-on-the-tree manual tranny column in it. I found a '72 SWB StepSide Bump in the wrecking yard and since the cab looked the same as my truck I pulled the column to put it in my pickup. It went right in.

I used the '72 steering wheel and other than a gap between the wheel and the column it worked fine. When I found an original steering wheel in a '71 (I believe) I got it and brought it home from the wrecking yard. I swapped the steering wheels. When I went to put the horn button from the '71 on the '72 column the center shaft was too long and the horn button wouldn't go on the steering wheel. The picture of the black wheel with the red highlights on it tells it all. I went back to the wrecking yard and got the '71 column too, now. I'll swap it out some day.

Yes, the one is an automatic column, BUT the '71 column looked the same way when I pulled the steering wheel off of the column in the yard, before I knew I needed the center shaft too.

Yep, you just have to cut off the parts above the threads to make the newer shafts work with the old wheels.

Shift handle and blinker look chromed. That would make it 69+ wouldn't it?
