See where the one of them points "up" and the others point "down".

What ford did is to make the OD work in these trannies in the 3rd gear position.

So in order for it to work they inverted the shifter arm so that it would work the same.

When you were shifting into 3rd you actually were shifting into 4th and then when you shifted into OD you were actually shifting into the 3rd gear location
Right.. I think I read about this 'trick' as they called it. So then I do have an overdrive 4th... er 3rd. ;-)

Here were the other 3 attachments... I think it limits me to 3 per reply.

Depends on whether I can find a replacement. I was told by a local tranny guy that it could be better for me to just replace it. I am really just trying to keep her running good and don't want the 4th gear problem to find its way in to 3rd and 2nd etc over time (especially since I don't know the exact problem). I have never worked on trannies and I am uneasy pulling it out incase I screw something up and it forces me to get a new used one. Wouldn't mind a nice 5-speed (NV4500), but I don't know enough about it yet to know which other trannies will fit with minimal to no 'modification'.

Might want to read the articles here: http://www.fordification.com/technical-home.htm

scroll down to the drivetrain area and see what others have done.
