Putting jack stands under the axle isn't safe? I have done that lots of times, without incident. Was I just lucky, or....?

As long as you're using quality jackstands, putting them under the axle is just fine. It's not unsafe by any means.

putting them under the axle is fine and yes blocking up the tires and refilling with air would be the way to get it off the stands. we did it on the side of the road for the people i used to work for. just to change a flat tire on a double axle trailer.

so is 235/75/15 too tall of a tire? it seems the speedo is off by 10mph

i have always jacked it up just out side the spring hanger and put my jack stand up then set it down and done the other side. On the axle housing. They are kind of in the way to do any brake work though?

yah doing brake work gets a little tight , and mine is even worse not having but a foot or 2 on either side of the truck.
