C6 Rebuild manual anyone?

Does anyone have a C6 rebuild manual? I was wondering what it would take to tackle this myself other than the tools to do so....

I was gonna rebuild mine also, then found for little under 500 rebuilt. E-Bay Florida seller. I got my C-6 book off of E-Bay also, (plenty of manuals there as well as disc versions).

Nice looking cab, wish I coulda found a 4 door!

I have two manuals.

One is a Haynes you could get at any book store, one is a ATSG that you can get under a TCI number at Summit Racing.

It doesn't look that hard...

I have the Haynes manual, it's not really helpful, IMO, but it beats nothing and the pictures do show you where things need to go.
I can't really vouch for how simple the rebuild would be, I've only torn my old one down at this point, but I don't expect any surprises at reassembly, it really looks simple.

The Haynes kind of fills in the more basic stuff that the ATSG thinks is obvious.

I find the ATSG a little lacking. My 1970 Ford shop manuals cover it quite well though, however you have to keep flipping back and forth through the pages. But good diagrams. The ATSG seems to be a partial reprint of the same information and diagrams. And I don't know about the Haynes.

I will recommend getting a bushing driver set for replacing the bushings as they are thinwall and don't readily have sockets that fit them. And if you possibly can, test the pressures from the pump before you remove the trans. It will tell you a lot about where you need to be looking inside for damages.

Back to pressures ... reverse puts out nearly 300psi in a good trans and it is expensive and hard to locate a guage that has graduations on it in this range. All the other gears run below 200psi so you could just skip reverse and test the Drive pressures.

Those are the only special tools you should need. Although a transmission adapter for an engine hoist would be darn nice. For the rest of the work it is standard sockets, wrenches and a couple of screwdrivers (for removing retaining rings). You will also need a torque wrench for the band adjustment. It is only torqued to 10 ft lbs (to convert to in lbs multiply by 12 ... so 10 ft lbs=120 in lbs) initially, then backed off one turn and locked down. I would suggest an inch pound torque wrench as you also need to torque the valve body bolts (20-40 inch pounds) to keep from warping the assy and causing the valve spools to bind.
I'm thinking you can dispense with the torque wrench for the big nut on the output shaft, otherwise a ft lb torque wrench would be nice.
And be very careful of the front (and only)pump. The gears have little stamped in marks and those face the front of the trans on reassembly ... not up so you can see them. And be extra sure the torque converter is seated into the pump before you slide the works under the vehicle because the pump is brittle and will break or crack if the torque converter is not fully seated and you attempt to install the trans and use the bellhousing bolts to pull it up.

Man, thank you for all of that information! I was wondering if the typical C6 rebuild kits had the pump with it. I would just as soon replace about everything to start with to make sure it is right.

I was thinking about getting the 5 volumes of the 70 ford pickup manuals. they are much better eh? that is cool to know.

Various degrees of rebuild kits out there, from just gaskets, to gaskets, seals, bushings, plates. Usually the hard parts are extra. Bulkparts.com I think is the place to go for kits and parts (I may have gotten that name wrong).

The pertinent book out of the series for your truck is volume one. It has the trans overhaul information. I'd recommend reading it through twice or so, so you can later recall that something was mentioned elsewhere that you might need to take care of before you start putting all the pieces back together for the final assembly.

I'm certainly not a pro at trans rebuilding. I have done a few though, and I still wind up with problems now and then. (Have one at this very moment and it's with my C6 ... but I will overcome that!)

But the C6 is a very straight forward transmission to teardown and work on as I have learned. I have torn down and rebuilt a lot worse transmissions.
